Responding Beyond Adolescence As we mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, this live illustration captures key themes emerging from the Responding Beyond Adolescence panel at Silenced CIC's Reframing Professional Practice on Child to Parent Abuse conference. The panel featured Freda Quinlan, Adult Social Worker and PhD Researcher from Ireland, Vivienne Evans OBE, of ADFAM, and Kyra Gonzales, specialist IDVA from Hourglass. Together, they explored the often hidden experiences of Adult Child to Parent Abuse (ACPA) and the challenges faced by older parents, carers and dependent adults experiencing harm within family relationships.
The illustration highlights several themes discussed during the session, including: - anchoring our work in the experiences of families - understanding coercion, control, dependency and isolation within family relationships - recognising the impact of shame, stigma and fear of disclosure - the need for clearer pathways, specialist risk assessment and multi-agency responses - improving data collection and recognition of ACPA across services - ensuring the voices of victims are heard and acted upon - recognising that caring relationships and dependency can sometimes be weaponised.
The panel reinforced that meaningful change requires professionals to move beyond assumptions, recognise abuse across the life course, and work collaboratively across systems rather than waiting until families reach crisis point. As conversations continue around elder abuse, safeguarding and domestic abuse, it is vital that Adult Child to Parent Abuse remains part of that discussion.
