Adult-Child to Parent Harm, Violence and Abuse in London: Professional Engagement in Research and Co-Creation

Dear Professional,

We invite you to participate in a crucial research project commissioned by the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) to understand and address adult-child to parent harm, violence and abuse in London. Your expertise and support are vital to this project's success.

About the Project: Our goal is to develop practical recommendations to improve support for those affected by adult-child to parent harm, violence and abuse in London. This research aims to inform policy and practice across the city. The first half of the project is focused on gathering insight through a literature review and fieldwork with professionals and survivors. Through this, we will co-develop recommendations for new and improved ways of tackling this issue. The second half of the project is trialling these recommendations with a small group of Local Authorities in London, before finalising recommendations for wider rollout.

Project Timescales:

  • Overall project: June-Dec 2024

  • Survivor and professional engagement/co-creation activities: July-Aug 2024

  • Trialling recommendations with select Local Authorities: Sept-Oct 2024

  • Final report submission: Dec 2024

  • Jo Sharpen – Independent VAWG consultant (previously Director of Policy at AVA)

  • Maria Duah – Founder, Silenced CIC (previously VAWG Operational Manager at Islington Council)

  • Dr. Victoria Baker - Manchester Metropolitan University (expert in VAWG and DHRs)

  • Professor Amanda Holt - University of Roehampton (expert in CAPVA and adult-child to parent harm, violence and abuse)

How You Can Help:

  1. Supporting Survivor Engagement:

a. Help recruit parents/carers for our online co-creation session – please see separate information sheet. The session is scheduled for 16th July 2024, 12-1.30pm. We are open to running an additional session if this time is difficult for your parents/carers. We are also asking services to offer practical support to parents/carers to support them to attend, as well as being available for any aftercare. We are able to offer a small amount of compensation to specialist services in recognition of caseworkers’ time.

b. Disseminate our parent/carer survey through your networks – please see separate information sheet.

  1. Professional Participation:

a. Multi-agency case review: Attend an online multi-agency case review session on 1st August 2024, 11am-1pm. The session will involve key professionals conducting a deep-dive of 3-4 anonymised cases of adult-child to parent harm, violence and abuse to map families’ journeys; identify effective support and potential intervention points; and co-create professional recommendations to trial in London. We are looking for a range of cases and if you have any cases that would benefit from a deep-dive discussion, please let us know.

b. Complete our professionals’ survey – further information to follow.

Time Commitment:

  • For survivors: 1.5-hour online co-creation session (or by exception, an alternative form of engagement) + time to complete the survey.

  • For professionals: 2-hour case review session + time to complete the survey.

Compensation for Parents/Carers:

  • Survivors will receive a £50 voucher of their choice for the co-creation session.

Compensation for Specialist Services Supporting Survivor Co-Creation Sessions:

  • We can provide a small amount of compensation to specialist services supporting survivor engagement and participation, in recognition of caseworkers’ time.

Confidentiality: All information will be kept strictly confidential. The sessions will be transcribed, anonymised and securely stored until our report is delivered to MOPAC in December 2024, at which point all stored information will be deleted. Our final report will include co-created recommendations from professionals/families but no identifying information.
